The missing-return count on lookups now follows the IRS’s enforcement window and leaves out periods whose filing requirement cannot be determined.
  • numMissingReturns counts tax returns that are required, not filed, and more than four weeks past their due date. It counts tax years from six years before the current year onward, plus any older year with an open IRS delinquency notice issued in the last 12 months. Periods whose filing requirement cannot be determined from the available IRS data are not counted.
  • Expect different values. A taxpayer’s count can go up or down: older years outside the window no longer count, and returns the IRS shows as filed under another number, secured by the IRS, or prepared by the IRS are not counted as missing.
  • No breaking change. The field, its type and the response shape are unchanged.
